Quote from: Firm on Nov 23, 2025, 10:44 PMAs a kid, family friends of ours had a proper arcade pinball machine in their basement and I used to look forward to visiting them a couple times a year so we could play it, theirs was Jurassic Park themed. I guess it kinda stuck with me and I've always kinda wanted one, but never had the space at our old place, nor could I justify the $, but I still would poke around on marketplace once and awhile. This showed up the other day, and it was only about 10 minutes from me, and a very good price, so I decided to grab it.
It's a 1987 'Special Force' model made by Bally Midway. In great working order, the cabinet could use a little love (which I'll do), but for nearly 40 years old it's in remarkable shape. These are highly collectable, though this one (or more so units from this era) is on the lower end of the desirability scale, it's still a lot of fun to play.

Childhood goal achieved :D

I love pinball machines as this was what largely was "video games" when I was younger.

I still love them!

I haven't found one to play in years.  Always loved pinball and some day I want to get a machine.

It's been getting a lot of use from everyone...My 7 year old loves it, which kinda surprised me, he's actually gotten pretty good! My FIL was in town for US Thanksgiving, he'd played a lot of pinball growing up in the 70's/80's, and schooled all of us on it, lol.

So from what I can see, it's a new version of the discontinued Civic Coupe, with the hybrid drivetrain, and the SI suspension and brakes, but is decontented (manual seats, fewer speakers) and costs $12k more than a Civic Touring.

At least it's not ugly like the last Civic Coupe was...

Actually it's the Type-S front suspension, and it's a hatchback. Not as "individual" as the older Preludes were, but I welcome anything sporty with 2 doors these days. And if it came with a Type S engine, it would have busted the internet.

Preludes used to be a bit larger than Civics, but today's Civics are, well...

So Type S / Type R front suspension? Does that include the fancy knuckle that eliminates torque steer?

Yup, the yummy anti-torque steer suspension bits paired with the hybrid drivetrain. Not sure if tracks are wider in this application...

There's a "shifting" feature that's added to the Prelude (to a car with no transmission per se, headscratcher for sure!)

That wouldn't be the same as the fake 'shifts' that the Civic Hybrid drivetrain does?

Edit: Nope, I see that it's paddle shifters. The Civic and CR-V and Accord have paddles, but it's to adjust the amount of regen. Honda simulates the engine's 'shift points' by just cutting fuel and letting revs drop.  I'm guessing that's what they'll do with the Prelude, but it will be user controllable?  All that motor does at lower speeds is act as a generator anyway.

Fun fact:  If you brake torque the hybrid drivetrain, it ignores the fake shifts and just pins the engine's RPM"s to get maximum power generation.

Yup, read that but did not try it yet. When I had the Macan EV, I set up a brake torque start on my secret deserted test road, and the dash lit up with "Launch control activated" - nobody was there to witness the stupid grin on my face. I doubt the Hondas would spin my stomach though.

Yeah, the Honda doesn't compare to a Macan EV.

If you don't push it, funny thing, from the wheel the Macan EV reminded me of a Honda. Simple crisp design, lots of hard black plastics, fades away as you drive.

Also, my 1 year old has learned how to say "Porsche"... and smiles/giggles every time I show him another 911 variant, either in photos or in Hot Wheels/models. I was wearing a t-shirt with an air-cooled 930 Turbo on it and he freaked out saying "POSHAAAA!" over and over again.

It's one of his first words and the best part is, he knows exactly what it is he's talking about...

Clearly has genius IQ if he loves Porsches! 😃
