Selling an old Cayenne on Marketplace

Oh my God!  It's the worst.

Latest one is Vavat, some kid from Romania living in Toronto.  Asks for my lowest price, give it to him.  Then asks if it's a 7-seater.  I reply that I don't think they made a 7-seat Cayenne, gotta get the Audi Q7 for that.
He replies "Well I think you don't know much about cars."  Then offers 1/3 my lowest price.  I blocked and gave him a single star review.

Have had guys make appointments and never show, same guy twice.  Lots of offers, but nobody shows up.

Arrrrgh!

When I put my BMW up on Marketplace in the spring I got a ton of messages from people in Ontario and Quebec – not too surprising, it's a cheap manual BMW wagon. Sent a few people detailed videos of the car but then I got lucky and had a local buyer come see it the day after I listed it, and he picked it up the day after that and paid close to what I was asking.

I've made $1000 this year on deposits for people who've flaked out on buying my car after they asked me to "hold it" and consider it sold..So could I take it off the market? Sure. $500 deposit and if you're not here by X date you forfeit deposit.

Happened twice.

After the 2nd time, I unlisted the car. Didn't feel like wasting my time over the summer, so perhaps I'll relist in the fall.

I feel your pain, dude!

I started putting a line in my ad saying "I will not respond to anyone who asks if the car is still available" and I'd still get those messages!

The average car buyer is an insufferable moron.

I got lucky when I sold my SLK last year on Marketplace, but I did have a few interesting trade offers & then some crazy lowball offers as well, but with those I had a lot of fun when they'd offer me $8k less than asking, I'd respond back with a counter-offer $8k over my asking price & then they'd get all confused & tell me I was being ridiculous... which I'd reply "exactly" :)

Did you put it up on Kijiji as well? Sometimes you have a bit better luck on there, less flaky people generally.

Yeah, should put it up there too.
I've had at least half a dozen  offers where I say "show up with the money"....and nobody does.  Flakes.

Sellers are no better... I tried to buy an LS 460 Sport from a clown near Windsor for full asking price and he didn't want to sell it to me...

You forgot the part about how you insisted the clown deliver the car to your doorstep (then find his own way home, all on his own time) as part of the deal because you were "too busy"...

I'd say buyers who think their time is more valuable than the sellers time can pose hurdles for a convenient, quick sale as well....

Yeah there are definitely some buyers out there who feel they are doing you a favour by buying your vehicle but it most certainly is the other way around when you are doing a private sale.  This isn't their livelihood and they don't have sales targets and bonuses to worry about.

Actually, I think the dropping it off idea was yours, when you were trying to buy something in Toronto already. And I thought it was a fair ask in exchange for full asking price, which you obviously weren't getting elsewhere.

Yes, everyone wants their own convenience in their own way.

It all worked out in the end, because if I'd bought yours, I would have had to unload it again when I found the '17.

In other news, this moved in one day, for full pop, to the first guy on it. Easy sale, neat trade-in ('17 Alpina B6 Gran Coupe) with some meat on the bone left for it too. I will really, really miss it and I'm glad I got to enjoy that experience for over two years.

Mine too. Everything about that car was exactly how I'd want one.

I'd have an impossible task of deciding between a used LC500 and all the 911 C4S I could get for the same money...

That's tough indeed, but my vote goes to the LC 100%.
