In my neck of the woods, the Tonale PHEV is pretty popular, I see them often. The Hornet on the other hand is a complete unicorn, for every 10 Tonales I see, I see maybe 1 Hornet.

I looked online and you can get a brand-new Tonale PHEV for around $50K, and a lightly-used model in the $30-40K range. Way cheaper than any RAV4 PHEV you can find, and on par with regular gas crossovers. So I see the appeal... uses less gas, and "more premium" than everything else in the same price range. I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole if I was looking to buy for the long run, but if I wanted to lease or buy and dump after 3-5 years, why not?

A month ago when I was changing the tires on the Mazda, I saw a weird use of the Tonale PHEV.  It was being used by a door-dasher, a middle-aged white guy, delivering food to one of my neighbours.

It just struck me as a little weird, as most Dashers are in Corolla's or Civics, or the odd Rav4 hybrid.  Also, at the risk of stereotyping, most 'dashers' are not middle-aged white guys, at least around these parts.

I think if one were to lease, it would be an intriguing vehicle to own for a few years.
