Heard a worn bearing type of sound from the rear and knew it was probably the rear motor assembly.
This turned up in a few threads about the Bz4x during my research, so I wasn't totally shocked. I knew it would be covered by warranty.
Took the car in and sure enough...needs replacement. Part of the warranty process is taking a video. So it was interesting to watch them drive the car to 80km/h on the hoist while filming it.
Part has been ordered. Cost for part is $10k. It's a newer part number so hopefully it's better for long term reliability.
Am glad warranty is 8 years.
Rock solid reference for the thread title.
Well, at least it's covered so it's only the inconvenience you're out. Did you get a loaner? Or can you still drive it?
;D
At least it was something you knew could possibly happen & was covered. Hopefully the newer version is more robust.

Yes, they still remain driveable throughout. I have never read of a truly dead motor. It's just a noise thing. Sounds like the groan of a bad wheel bearing. Once you hear it though...you can't unhear it and becomes annoying. Volume at 24 obscures the sound.
I will be getting a loaner. The dealer says I'm the first one needing this repair, so they want to take their time. They're just waiting for the part to arrive and then we'll get the ball rolling.
I thought there might be a couple who recognize the reference! 😃
Oh I was under the impression your vehicle was brand new. Hopefully you get it back soon.
Is it $10k for the electric motor part, or does that include the labour to install? Seems a bit pricy if it's just a motor considering how much motor you can buy for $10k if it's an ICE application.
Good thing for the warranty. I consider myself pretty ballsy with my automotive choices, but I wouldn't own an EV out of warranty.

Same.
Back when Edmund's had their excellent Inside Line car mag, I enjoyed reading about all the issues they had with their early build Model S. It went through multiple motors and batteries, on top of chewing up tires. So it does happen.
Dropped the car off for new motor install..new experience for them.

Glad you caught it under warranty.

I should be good for a couple more! LOL 😆
The mandated 8 years 160,000 km is good peace of mind. Unless you bought a Fisker, or buy a VinFast who are showing signs they won't make it to 8 years in Canada.

I don't understand people who are willing to roll the dice on sketchy, no name ev's. I won't buy powertools from the dollar store, why would you risk your family on a highway in the car equivalent??!!
VinFast's entry into our market was puzzling at best. The non government vetted reviews in their home market gave their products a low score, but their plan was to come in at prices rivaling the established players if not more. $60,000 for a 5 seat crossover? $80,000 for a 6/7 seat crossover? Which may have been ok as the lowest price entrant when announced, except Kia simultaneously came in with the 7 seat EV9 starting from $59,999 which kiboshed VinFast's plans big time.
Maybe they were hoping to be the next Tesla. Now they won't lease out their vehicles anymore which signals serious trouble.

2025, so not the new one.
I dropped the car off yesterday (Tuesday) at 9am and was shocked when they called today a 10:30am saying it was done.
This is their first motor replacement, so it must not be terribly difficult.
Will pick up on Thursday and see!

Is that something that happens inside the ring road of Winnipeg
Quote from: Fobroader on Apr 02, 2026, 01:29 PMIs that something that happens inside the ring road of Winnipeg
Only when your Mom's visiting....
LOL
Got car back and that same day it went into "limp mode". Pulled the code. Cooling for EV system. I pop the hood and the EV cooling system is bone dry!
So one of two things happened:
1) they totally forgot to put coolant in (because EV?).
2) they put coolant in and didn't tighten a fitting properly and it all leaked out.
As always, confidence in any stealership's abilities remains zero. Another good example of why people hate stealerships so much.
Coolant is called "Genuine Toyota Traction Battery Coolant". It's $25 per 500ml.
Car left on flatbed. We'll see what comes of this.
Well that's more than a little bit annoying. I had a somewhat similar thing happen when I got the turbo replaced on my Golf R. On the way home from having it replaced, the low coolant light comes on just before getting home (thankfully it's not a long distance from our home to the dealership). Called the dealership, the manager apologized instantly and drove right over to fill it up. Turns out it just wasn't fully topped up as I guess they forgot to top it up after the test drive.
Let's hope it was just a minor inconvenience and not something you'll be worried about going forward.

Not terribly worried about the reliability of the car itself.
Very worried about dealing with incompetent stealerships who create problems rather than solve them.

Yeah this issue has nothing to do with the vehicle's reliability but fully on the ability of the dealership to do good work.

Caught the dealer in a very obvious lie today. Sigh....
During the original phone call to get the vehicle back in, I said the only 2 ways this happens is if the tech didn't top up the coolant OR there was a loose fitting and the coolant leaked out. Or both. Service advisor said the Tech insisted he "topped up" the coolant and it was full before the vehicle left.
Today they call me and say that the vehicle will be delayed because they don't stock that coolant and it's hard to get so we have to wait 2-3 days.
I then asked "How did the Tech top up the coolant with a coolant you guys don't stock?" Crickets...nothing but crickets was the answer.
Turns out there WAS a fitting that wasn't tight. So I was right on both counts, apparently: they did a poor AND didn't check the coolant.
Sigh....

And that's it...there's nowhere else for this convo to go.

That's exactly what's so annoying about it. I have FAR more respect from someone who admits their mistake and tries to correct it. But denying or dismissing you did anything wrong just compounds the issue to the point of not trusting the person/organization and viewing them as incompetent.
I'd probably talk to the service manager and use this as a teaching moment, admitting you did something wrong is a much better way of gaining trust than denying when clearly you fucked up.
How busy is that dealership? I find that usually the service managers have sooooo many cars coming in & out in a day that they don't have the memory capacity to even remember what cars came in & what needed to be done. Not that that's an acceptable excuse, but more of an explanation :D

They did call today and ask if they could keep it overnight and have Manager drive it around a bit from now until then just to be sure everything is OK.
