Quote from: Blizzard on Mar 06, 2026, 12:08 PMlegitimately lease a brand-new Fiat 500e for $145/month all-in with $0 down for 24 months. Apparently with the government subsidies and manufacturer rebates, combined with high residuals, many dealers are in fact leasing these cars for that price, and the $29/week is not just a price to get you in the door.

Quebec only deal? It's nearly $500 month in Ontario?

^ Adi might have some insights on that, I know a bunch of the DC crew recently acquired 500es with really cheap monthly costs.

It sounded like he went to the website to confirm the pricing.

I presume I went to the same website. And the price was nearly $500 a month ($116 week) in Ontario.

Even with that good of a deal, after the two year lease did over, they have to go shopping again, and probably won't find another deal like that.

Whereas a used Civic/Corolla would probably go the distance for 5-10 years without too many problems.

I think it was a Quebec only promotion, and probably for a limited time. The MSRP of the car is around $40K but when on the website after rebates and subsidies it was showing as $23,000 or something (I guess this would be a weird blend of pre/post tax because of the way subsidies are applied). Then the residual value after a 2 year lease was around $20K which is how the lease payment ended up being so low.

I haven't checked the website again but on Autotrader I still see new 2025s advertised around $23-24K.

Quote from: Johnnymac on Mar 06, 2026, 05:28 PMWhen someone seeks out my opinion on vehicles and I put some real effort into it, giving them pros and cons, sending them used car ads, telling how much payments should be and they decide to buy something else...I assume they don't value my opinion and that's the last time I offer them assistance.

I tend to think younger people choose new vehicles for a lot of reasons, but one that I think is more prevalent now but less when we all were young is they feel like a used car will be a headache in both reliability and cost of maintenance, while that might be logical for some used vehicles, majority don't fall into that category.

My nephew is dealing with this now. He has a 16 year old Mazda 3 that he has owned for ten years. It was his first car when he was 20.It's starting to show it's age. He is on the hunt for a newer used compact or new compact car. He has a good down payment. He is swaying towards the new because of the lower interest rate. The pricing on the late model used while a bit lower have higher interest rates.

Back in the day when I had a car payment we considered 400 a month for 4 years the maximum. How times have changed.

We did the opposite re: new cars.

Told the kid no new car purchases until after he has a house...that's his most important, pressing purchase. Told him if he bought a new car, that would signal to us that he has more money than brains. And since he has so much money that he doesn't know what to do with, I'd be getting in on his riches in the form of full market value rent.

If you've got money to blow, some of it is going to end up in my pocket, thank you very much!

He's still driving his 2009 Acura CSX..... :)

The "bonus" of driving an older car has taught him the importance of maintenance and he's learned some DIY in the process (oil changes, brakes, etc)

Fiat 500e - When the federal subsidy came back on, Quebec Stellantis dealers added that to the provincial incentive and Stellantis', the result being 125$/mo + tax for a 48 mo lease, no cash down, on remaining 2025 inventory. It took just a few days to get the entire allotment sold!
