Title: The Weather Thread
Post by: Bubba on Dec 06, 2024, 10:07 AM
Everyone loves talking about the weather, right?   :D

Up and down temps in Winnipeg for the next week.  Saturday's high will be +4, then the temp cascades down to -18 by next Wednesday.

Winnipeg normals: Max-8°C.Min-18°C.

Worked our way out of a cold snap, temps up around zero for the weekend and back to normal next week. We've had about 40cm of snow over the past two weeks. Nice to have that on the ground this winter.

Snow cover maps from Jan 1st and Jan 6th. This week's storm left quite a trail from the plains to the east coast.

It's been a while since we've seen snow that far south... By all accounts the driving is a nightmare.

No kidding. It was +16C here on Sunday, and this morning it was -2C. Not exactly Cold by Canadian standards, but definitely the coldest weather I've felt in quite awhile...Suppose to be similar all week. So far it's been dry, but there is potential snow in the forecast Thursday night. It's big news here, and the southerners are getting concerned; I stopped at the grocery store for a couple things on the way home tonight and the shelves were near bare with people 'stocking up'.

Woke up to some legitimate snow this morning school and office closed. Looks like most of it will melt over the weekend, but still kinda shocking to see around here. Guess I'll have to go find my snow shovel in the shed and clear the walkway at some point today....

Yeah, kids are hyped...I haven't gone out yet as I've been on work calls, but I'll go out at lunch and show them my snowball throwing skills  8)

I am sure the roads are a right mess...no snow tires (usually bald all-seasons), no experience driving in snow, and no salt/clearing equipment (city has 1 or 2 plows, that's it). So even though I have plenty of experience driving in snow, and an AWD SUV with brand new all-terrains, I am staying off the majors. Looks like a lot of people did the same though. Here's I40 into downtown Memphis maybe 2-miles back from the Mississippi

Hopefully temps warm up enough to at least clear the roads of ice and snow in the next few days.

I've had a look at Virtual Railfan's Youtube channel that cycles through cameras in Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, among others. No shortage of snow!

It's warming up enough now that the roads are melting, even my very quiet residential street is showing bare spots. Looks like we got about 6" total. Brushed off the cars, shovel the walk way and hit the kids with a few snowballs....The first two task I absolutely do not miss.

Blizzard conditions are have developed in parts of southern Manitoba this Friday morning.

Very strong northerly winds gusting as high as 90 km/h will give very poor visibility in snow and blowing snow.

Winnipeg Temp at 9 am is -6 and is expected to drop to -25 tomorrow morning.

Thankfully, I don't have to leave my apartment today.

Warmest and least amount of snow I've seen in the Okanagan since we moved here. Getting around -2 at nights and think the coldest has been -6 all year. Days are all +2 to +6.

Hopefully you can just stay put Bubba, sounds like a nasty storm!

Things got ugly on local highways.

20 cm of snow here yesterday in the Laurentians with daytime highs over the next few days around -20. Overnight lows should be around -30. Brrrr... I think this is the coldest it's been in 2 years here. It's typical to have a couple nights each year around -30 but last winter (the winter that barely happened) I don't think it went below -20 more than a few times.

Was crazy cold this morning, car was saying -27.  The clutch was like shifting in molasses and was by far the worst fuel economy on this drive ever at just shy of 12L/100km.  Did have to start and let it warm up for about 5 minutes, which is the first time we have had to do it now that we have the carport.

I came here knowing that Bubba would have a snow cover map. 6" of snow in Pensacola is unheard of...It was 15F here, so about -9C, in SW Tennessee when I got into the car this morning. Definitely the coldest I've felt since leaving Canada...We were lucky that there's been no wind, which makes the temperatures a lot more hospitable.

It's silly from a Canadian perspective, but infrastructure here isn't built for this type of cold, pipes burst because houses/buildings have them run in exterior walls, furnaces running 24/7 to keep up, grid is stressed from people running electric heat, etc. We've been pretty fortunate, dripping the taps has prevented any pipe bursts, our power has been reliable and the house stays warm....even though one of the three furnaces, the one for the main floor kitchen/lobby area has been running constantly.

Weather has been brutal, been in a deep freeze for over a week and it just keeps on. Forecasting -40C tonight, and -45C tomorrow night. That's without the windchill. Looks like it's supposed to break by Thursday.  I may break before then :P

At least its a dry cold??

Ottawa doesn't quite get the frigid temps it used to.  While we haven't had a day above freezing since New Years, I don't think the ambient temperatures has dropped below -25.

The snow though, holy hell we have a lot of snow.

Absurd amount of snow in Montreal over the past week. 35 cm on Thursday followed by another 40 cm on Sunday, along with crazy winds. There hasn't been this much snowfall in such a short time since the 1940s apparently. The suburbs are mostly passable, since they generally push snow to the side and they're efficient at removing snow from the few main streets that require it. Inner city though is a disaster, including downtown. Many sidewalks are completely buried and will remain so for the next week because there's nowhere for the sidewalk plows to push the snow, until the huge snowbanks are removed.

The pictures of street-parked cars buried are nuts... If I was affected I'd probably just get my car towed and pay the fine, rather than trying to dig it out.

Montreal is not designed to store snow. And urban planners don't want to hear about suburban-style building setbacks, even in areas that can make it work, to store snow instead of loading it.

It's funny because in the suburbs, the tendency lately has been to build high-rise condos with setbacks, so the developer can advertise X% of "green space" and use it as a selling point (a 12-story condo building with 50% green space sounds like a great idea in theory). But the NIMBYs are furious and complain that they should build lower buildings with no frontage (plex-style) because the towers don't build community, aren't for families, block sunlight, etc... Seems like you can't win  ;D

It was nasty.  Even while plugged in, the CX-5 refused to start.  First time that's ever happened.

Luckily a neighbour saw me and pulled into the driveway to boost my car.
One of the stops I made today was to pickup a Noco Genius booster pack for the next time this happens.

Also, it's been over a week and a half since I last went fatbiking.  I'm a wuss, so -15c is my limit.  I'm looking forward to the weather warming up so I can get back out on two wheels and have some fun!

This winter has been a bit odd in Fredericton. 3-4 times we've had significant snow in the forecast and then had barely anything happen. A couple of weeks ago Saint John which is about 100 km away they got well over 30 cm while we got a light dusting. With them being on the coast usually the opposite would happen.

We're getting very little of this big storm that is pummeling so many places right now. It was supposed to snow all night but it started later than it was supposed to and we only have a couple cms down right now and it doesn't look like we're getting much more.

Man, those are some cold temps!
We had this winter storm that's impacted a lot of the US roll through here over the weekend. Temps dropped to around -15C overnight, which is highly unusual as we only occasionally see nights below freezing, and received about 4" of ice pellets/snow. Due to the ice pellets it's a very hard/icy snow, almost like concrete, weird stuff that's very difficult to clear. Got out with the Escalade yesterday and rode around a bit, even major roads are snow covered as there's little snow clearly equipment here, very few people on the roads. Office is closed today as well.

Looks like the GTA got around 50cm of snow last night, pretty crazy for one dumping!

Yeah, I mean, even in Toronto the 'storm' we had here would be pretty typical and everything would've been business as usual. There's just no infrastructure or preparedness for it here....No plows, no salters, so the roads stay snow covered and icy, lots of home not built for cold so a lot people had burst pipes and such. Few people have snow brushes, ice scrapers, shovels, etc. Nobody has winter tires, etc.
I also didn't realize how many trucks & SUVs here are 2WD....almost everyone has a full-sized crew cab truck or a Tahoe/Suburban, my brain is programmed to assume that they're all 4x4/AWD, but they're not....in fact, the majority of them are 2WD. So lots of those stuck all over the place. Lots of Challenger/Charger/Camaro/Mustang here too with summer tires that are absolutely useless getting around.

I immediately thought of you Firm when watching the news. Is your house ok? We saw Dallas under snow and ice too, and the last time this happened there were tons of power grid failures and burst pipes, in houses and in streets. Could be awhile until things warm up too.

Good thing this climate change thing is just a hoax according to the Corrupt-in-Chief  ;)
Title: Re: The Weather Thread
Post by: Firm on Jan 27, 2026, 10:32 AM
Yeah, we're all good here. Most of the dramatic looking ice storm happened north of us, closer to Nashville, so other than the roads being really sketchy, it's been fine here. House is holding up well to the cold, power has stayed on, etc. It is supposed to stay cold until Monday, gradually warming, so I think we're through the worst of it.

I was in the GTA over the weekend for my Dad's 80th, and tried to GTFO as quickly as possible on Sunday morning. Took the 407 from the 410 out to the 115/35 and it was sketchy as fuck the whole way across the city with some white-out conditions. Once we got up to Peterborough, HWY 7 was decent enough where we could do 100 most of the way back to Ottawa.

We had like 2-weeks of sub-freezing temps and it brought me back home....no good. We're back up into seasonal, or slightly above, temps. Today is 15C and sunny, but by later in the week it's mid-20's. We're just in this cycle where it seems to be nice all week and then dreary and rainy on the weekends which is frustrating.

I don't mind it either, but obviously being a skier helps. For a week I swear I was shoveling every day, we'd get enough that it had to be cleaned, but not enough for the snowblower... last few I've used the snowblower though as there was enough. I'd shovel around the cars & push it down past them & then use the snowblower to clear that, plus my  walkway beside the house to the backyard & then all of my back patio as well & a path to the shed.

Been a fantastic season for the Rideau Canal Skateway this year, it's been open since Dec 31st!! They closed it last night at 10pm & will remain closed today due to warmer temps, but I imagine they'll be able to give it a good flood in the next couple of nights & reopen it later this week.

I was fully prepared to leave the Prius parked this morning and take the CX-5 into work.  I woke up to zero snow, so I took the Prius.

As of 2PM, this is the current situation during our 'massive snowstorm'PXL_20260218_201258403.jpg
